What Are Gentle Start and Late Drop in Moonfade Pro?
Gentle Start and Late Drop are optional Pro fade-curve choices that shape how Moonfade's 0–60-second fade behaves. They are separate from the countdown duration and do not extend or shorten the timer. Confirm the audible result with a short test.
Gentle Start and Late Drop are two optional fade-curve choices included with the one-time Moonfade Pro upgrade. They change how the 0–60-second media-volume fade behaves after the countdown ends; they do not change the timer length, and they do not change when the fade starts. Because the exact audible shape depends on your media and device, confirm the result with a short test rather than assuming a particular curve. Official product overview.
With Stop audio & video enabled, countdown completion starts the configured 0–60-second media-volume fade, followed by an audio-focus request to pause playback. Moonfade then separately requests display lock when Turn off the screen is enabled. Disabling Stop audio & video skips both fade and audio focus. These requests do not prove that the player paused or the physical display locked.
Fade curves versus duration
The timer duration and the fade curve are separate choices. Duration is how long the countdown runs before the ending begins. The fade happens after the countdown completes, over 0 to 60 seconds, followed by a request to pause playback. Gentle Start and Late Drop shape that fade window; they do not add time to the countdown and they do not shorten it. If you want a different total ending, adjust the duration and the fade length, not the curve.
Set the duration from the dial (1 minute to 24 hours) or a preset, and set the fade in Settings from 0 to 60 seconds. Moonfade then lowers the Android media-volume stream and requests audio focus when the fade finishes. Whether the player actually pauses depends on the media app and Android device.
What Gentle Start and Late Drop are
Both are optional Pro fade curves. Gentle Start and Late Drop are listed among the Pro features alongside the ad-free experience, five editable quick presets, the home-screen timer widget, and four additional night themes. They are not part of the free timer setup, and they are not required to use Moonfade.
The names describe a choice between fade styles, not a specific mathematical shape or exact timing. Do not rely on an assumed curve; the audible result depends on the fade length you set, the media, and the device.
Test the curve before a long session
A short test is the practical way to hear what a curve does with your usual player.
- Start playback in your media app.
- In Moonfade, choose a short duration and a fade length that is easy to hear, such as several seconds.
- Select Gentle Start or Late Drop, then tap Start.
- Complete any prompted Android Device Admin activation for screen lock; the countdown cannot begin until it is done.
- Listen through the ending and note how the volume falls and whether playback pauses.
- After that test ends, start a fresh short timer with the other curve or fade length while keeping the player and output the same. If you cancel a running test early, use the notification stop action and inspect playback separately.
Make sure Stop audio & video is enabled in Settings before testing. Moonfade lowers the media-volume stream and requests audio focus; a player may or may not pause. Test with the player you actually use, and retest if you change media apps.
When the choice matters
Use Gentle Start or Late Drop when the default fade feels too abrupt or too slow for your listening. Use the fade-length setting when you want to change how long the fade takes. Keep the timer duration separate: a fade curve does not buy you more listening time, and it does not end the countdown sooner.
If you only need the countdown to end and do not care about the shape of the fade, the free setup is enough. Pro is an optional one-time Google Play purchase, not a subscription. Restore it from the Moonfade Pro screen using Restore purchase and the Google Play account that made the purchase.
Limits to keep in mind
The curve is a preference within the fade, not a guarantee about playback. Moonfade cannot guarantee that every player pauses; the request to pause is player- and device-dependent. Gentle Start and Late Drop also do not control smart speakers, cast playback, or hardware power.
If the ending still surprises you, check the fade length and the Stop audio & video setting before changing the curve again.
Start a short timer in Moonfade with your usual media app, pick one of the Pro curves, and listen to the ending before using it for a longer session. Get Moonfade on Google Play to try the fade options.
